The Ethics of Altitude Simulation in Sport
Will the use of altitude simulation technology result in guaranteed increases in performance?
Too low an altitude, natural or simulated, and there is not enough stimulus. Too high and the sleep quality is impaired, which limits recovery.
The time that is spent at altitude, whether the number of hours per day, or the number of consecutive days, is also a decision that the athlete must incorporate into their training plan.
Furthermore, nutritional intake must be considered, as well as the timing of when to start and finish altitude training before the competition.
Because of the complex nature of these decisions, CAT recommends that athletes work with a skilled coach who can help them develop, and subsequently refine, effective personalized protocols.
This whole aspect only further differentiates altitude training from merely taking drugs, where success is pretty much automatic, and generally with no lifestyle compromises, except guilt and safety.
